If you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or other lung diseases, your healthcare provider has prescribed medications that require a nebulizer. The nebulizer is a small machine that turns medicinal liquid into mist. You sit next to the machine and inhale through the connected mouthpiece. When you breathe slowly and deeply for 10 to 15 minutes, the medicine will enter your lungs. Inhaling medicine into the lungs in this way is easy and enjoyable. If you have asthma, a nebulizer can deliver medicine more easily than an inhaler.

The nebulizer changes from liquid to mist so that it can inhale the medicine more easily. It is to provide medicines for the treatment of asthma, and it is particularly effective when inhaled by infants and people with asthma.

This is also convenient when large doses of inhaled medicine are required. Nebulization therapy is often referred to as “respiratory therapy.” A variety of drugs (including immediate relief and maintenance of asthma symptoms) can be used with the nebulizer.

The basic steps to set up and use your nebulizer are as follows:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly.

2. To use the atomizer, first place the compressor on a flat surface, make sure your atomizer is placed where you feel comfortable, because you will stay here at least for a while, then plug it into a power outlet.

3. Add medicine to your nebulizer. Measure the correct dose of medicine and other solutions prescribed by the doctor. Add these to the atomizer.

4. Assemble the nebulizer cup and mask or mouthpiece. Make sure that both ends are connected firmly.

5. If you are using a mask, place it comfortably and firmly on your or your child’s face. If you are using a mouthpiece, place it between your or your child’s teeth and seal the surrounding with your lips.

6. Breathe through your mouth until all the medicine is used up. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. If necessary, use a nose clip so that you can only breathe through your mouth. Children usually do better if they wear masks.

7. Turn off the machine when finished.

Maintenance and cleaning of atomizer equipment after each use:

After each treatment, rinse the nebulizer cup thoroughly with warm water, shake off the excess water, and then air dry. Do not clean the pipe; if water gets in, be sure to replace it. At the end of each day, the nebulizer cup, mask or mouthpiece should be cleaned with a mild detergent or in warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and then air-dried.

After it is completely dry, reassemble and store in a cool and dry place.
