How the Alternating Pressure Cushion Works

The powered system moves air through connected cells in a 12-minute cycle. As one group receives more air, another group reduces pressure, periodically changing the contact pattern beneath the seated area. This active cycle is the defining difference between an alternating pressure cushion and a manually inflated cushion that maintains one fixed air distribution.

For activities that benefit from a steadier surface, the pump can temporarily hold the selected inflation through its static function. Alternating and static operation can therefore be selected from the same control unit without changing the cushion.

The selected pressure level should maintain stable seating while allowing the air cells to complete their intended cycle. Users and care teams can move between the three pressure levels from the pump as seating needs change.
